Researchers from North Carolina State University have found a very high prevalence of Bartonella bacteria in tumors and tissues -- but not blood samples -- taken from dogs with hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the blood vessels. The work further supports the connection between persistent infection and some types of cancer and adds to the evidence that Bartonella can remain and thrive, undetected, within tissue.

Abstract
Two immunocompetent patients with cat-scratch disease due to infection with Bartonella henselae developed monoclonal and biclonal gammopathy. Neither patient had evidence of any other known cause of plasma cell dyscrasia, and antibiotic eradication of Bartonella henselae infection resulted in the prompt disappearance of the gammopathy. Hence, cat-scratch disease should be added to the list of possible underlying disorders in individuals presenting with monoclonal and biclonal gammopathy.

Het aantal co-infecties in teken is schrikbarend hoog te noemen en het ligt dan ook in de lijn der verwachting dat Lymepatiënten een reële kans hebben, dat ze nog met een ander organisme geïnfecteerd zijn. Patiënten die na een antibioticabehandeling geen verbetering laten zien moeten dan ook gescreend worden op co-infecties. Helaas gebeurt dit nauwelijks

Epidemiologie
De species van het geslacht Bartonella zijn korte, pleomorfe, gram-negatieve staafvormige bacteriën, aerobic en oxidase-negatieve organismen. Een belangrijke eigenschap van de Bartonella is, dat alle species zich intraerythrocytair (in de rode bloedlichamen) ophouden. Ze vermenigvuldigen zich tot ongeveer 8 stuks en blijven intraerythrocytair tot de cel afsterft. De organismen kunnen gecultiveerd worden na een lysis van de erythrocyten. Door de nieuwe detectie methode met PCR vond er een naamsverandering plaats in 1992 van de Bartonella. Tot 1990 waren slechts twee species bekend n.l. B.quintana en B. bacilliformis. Sindsdien zijn een groot aantal species ontdekt en beschreven bij in het wild levende dieren. Op het moment zijn 19 species en 3 subspecies beschreven. Hiervan zijn, voor zover tot nu toe bekend 9 species humaan pathogeen, zoals B.quintana, B.henselae, B.bacilliformis, B.clarridgeiae, B.elizabethae B.vinsonii, B.berkhoffii, B.arupensis en B.grahamii.

Bartonella bacilliformis komt voor in Z-Amerika en veroorzaakt de Carrion's ziekte of Oroya koorts welke overgebracht wordt door een zandvlieg. In de acute fase worden de meeste erythrocyten geïnfecteerd en veroorzaken hemolitische anemie met koorts, waarna de ziekte overgaat in een chronische vorm. De ziekte komt alleen in het Andesgebergte voor.

Bartonella quintana veroorzaakt loopgraven koorts en wordt overgebracht door luizen. Door de slechte hygiënische omstandigheden tijdens de eerste wereldoorlog kregen veel soldaten in Europa deze infectie vandaar de naam. De ziekte wordt gekenmerkt door recidiverende koorts, huidafwijkingen en botpijnen.

Bartonella henselae bestaat uit twee subspecies n.l. type I (Houston I) en type II (BA-TF/Marseille), is wereldwijd verspreid en veroorzaakt de kattenkrabziekte

Lehrbuch Lyme-Borreliose;

Die Problematik Lyme-Borreliose und Coinfektionen bezieht sich grundsätzlich auf den chronischen Verlauf. Die Coinfektionen haben also nur Bedeutung für die chronische Lyme-Borreliose (Spätstadium, Stadium III). Andererseits erfordert der synergistisch-pathologische Mechanismus, dass auch die Coinfektionen in chronisch persistierender Form vorliegen.
Anamnestisch ist zu beachten, ob Coinfektionen in ihrer akuten Form der Frühphase aufgetreten sind, da dies zur Erkennung der Coinfektion in der chronischen Phase beiträgt.

Results
Patients residing in a Lyme-endemic area of New Jersey with ongoing symptoms attributed to chronic Lyme disease were evaluated for possible coinfection with Bartonella species. Elevated levels of B henselae–specific antibodies were found in these patients using the immunofluorescent assay. Bartonella henselae–specific DNA was detected in their blood. None of these patients exhibited the clinical characteristics of cat-scratch disease. Findings of cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed the presence of both B henselae– and Borrelia burgdorferi–specific DNA. Bartonella henselae–specific DNA was also detected in live deer ticks obtained from the households of 2 of these patients.

Conclusions
Our data implicate B henselae as a potential human tick-borne pathogen. Patients with a history of neuroborreliosis who have incomplete resolution of symptoms should be evaluated for B henselae infection.
