Immune response to the Lyme spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi affected by ethanol consumption.
Pavia CS1, Bittker S, Cooper D.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1774157

Abstract
Rats fed excessive amounts of ethanol developed marked hematologic and immunologic changes. These included a reversal of the normal lymphocyte to granulocyte ratio in the peripheral blood, lower spleen and lymph node weights and a greatly reduced capacity to express normal cell mediated immune functions, based on poor lymphocyte reactivity in vivo, and in vitro to T and B cell mitogens and borrelial antigens shortly after primary immunization with the bacterial spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi. Further evidence for impaired immune function caused by ethanol was based on little or no antibody response against Borrelia in rats following in vivo sensitization with B. burgdorferi incorporated in complete Freund's adjuvant. These findings provide substantial direct evidence strengthening the notion that high levels of ethanol ingestion adversely affect the host immune system and can interfere with the immune response to microorganisms.

The hidden reality of Lyme Disease - Dr. Mercola

Lab tests rely on the normal function of these cells to produce the antibodies they measure. If your white cells are infected, they don't respond to an infection appropriately. Interestingly, the worse your Borrelia infection is, the less likely it will show up on a blood test. In order for Lyme tests to be useful, you have to be treated first. Once your immune system begins to respond normally, only then will the antibodies show up.
This is called the "Lyme Paradox"—you have to be treated before a proper diagnosis can be made.

Weird way Lyme Disease bugs avoid immune system;

Researchers have known since 2000 that Borrelia doesn't have the genes it would need to make iron-containing proteins. But no one knew what they were using instead. Culotta and her colleagues used specialized equipment to measure metal-containing proteins in Borrelia, detecting metal content down to parts per trillion.
They found that the bacterium substitutes manganese for iron, particularly in defensive proteins that help protect the pathogen against the immune system.

We found that B. burgdorferi actively attaches to, invades, and kills human B and T lymphocytes.

Immune Dysfunction;

The roles of immune dysfunction, autoimmunity and persistent bacterial infection are all plausible causative biologic mechanisms of PTLDS being investigated at our Center.

What happens if a patient doesn’t recover from Late Lyme Arthritis?

After extensive antibiotic treatment, approximately 10% of late Lyme arthritis patients remain symptomatic with a condition termed antibiotic refractory late Lyme arthritis. Extensive research has shown that the bacteria can no longer be found in the tissue or fluid of this subgroup of patients. Their continued swelling of the joints and pain is thought to be perpetuated by their own immune system’s autoimmune condition. Their autoimmunity continues to inflame the tissues and cause swelling and pain even in the absence of detectable bacteria.

Following antibiotic therapy, approximately 90% of late Lyme arthritis patients recover from extensive joint swelling, arthritis, and pain.

New Stanford University data clarifies immune dysfunction infection in cancer, ME/CFS, Ms;

Davis starts by confirming that ME/CFS is characterized by high levels of systemic inflammation. In fact, in concert with Dr. Jose Montoya at Stanford, Davis detected elevated cytokines (inflammatory molecules) in the blood of patients with ME/CFS. First, this cytokine activation distinguished the ME/CFS patients from healthy controls: does anyone still want to argue that the ME/CFS is psychosomatic!? (please tell me no). Second, patients with more severe cases of ME/CFS demonstrated greater cytokine activation; indicating that ME/CFS disease progression is characterized by increased immune dysfunction over time.

Davis used a novel assay developed at Stanford to obtain T cell sequences from the tissues/blood of patients with colon cancer, MS, Lyme disease, and ME/CFS.

CONSIDERATIONS: Davis’ data strongly suggests that in cancer, MS, Lyme disease, and ME/CFS the immune system is activated against an infectious threat. This threat could be one pathogen, or it could be many pathogens acting together (in a community).

Cytokines in Lyme Borreliosis;

The difference in clinical outcome, an issue of investigation for many years, is probably influenced by several factors, such as not only virulence of the strain, infectious dose, genetic factors of the host, but also the type of host immune response that is elicited against the invading bacteria. During the course of the disease different cytokines are secreted. These immune signalling molecules have important regulatory and effector functions that shape the ensuing immune response.
