Biofilms & persister forms;

they hinder the treatment and promote the persistence of the pathogens in the organism of the infected person.

the problem is that it is not always possible to prove the existence of those pathogens in the material that is easily accessible to us (such as blood, urine or saliva) but rather in cells and bradytrophic tissues, i.e. with little blood supply.

The molecule ajoene has been shown to destabilise the communication system of harmful bacteria. Used in harness with antibiotics it can tackle infections that are otherwise tough customers.

When bacteria communicate

Bacteria generally like to bunch together. They communicate by creating a protective, slimy membrane around one another, called biofilm. When harmful bacteria do this they can cause a lot of damage.
Antibiotics and our immune defence have trouble penetrating biofilm and chronic infections can result. Bacteria can evolve genetically, exchange genes and develop resistance.
The substance extracted from garlic does not kill the bacteria on its own, but it harms their defence mechanism, the biofilm.

Knoflook samen met antibioticum kan helpen, maar wel rauw nemen :mrgreen:

De werkzame stof uit knoflook verdwijnt al bij lage temp. (opwarmen)

The Emerging Role of Microbial Biofilm in Lyme Neuroborreliosis;

In preliminary studies by the clinical Biofilm Ring Test® (cBRT), we found that Borrelia is able to readily produce biofilm within 24–48 h. Diagnostic procedures such as the cBRT, which allow for a rapid biofilm measurement may represent very useful tools for clinical applications (222, 223), since the rapid identification of biofilm-producing Borrelia strains, may help identify forms of LB which are at risk of chronicity (224). Further, characterization of Borrelia biofilm as well as the ensuing inflammatory process will likely provide novel insight to better understand the mechanism(s) concurring to LNB pathogenesis and may offer new therapeutic targets for intervention.

Biofilm;

Biofilms are not just bacterial slime layers but biological systems; the bacteria organize themselves into a coordinated functional community. Biofilms can attach to a surface such as a tooth, rock, or surface, and may include a single species or a diverse group of microorganisms. The biofilm bacteria can share nutrients and are sheltered from harmful factors in the environment, such as desiccation, antibiotics, and a host body's immune system. A biofilm usually begins to form when a free-swimming bacterium attaches to a surface

Biofilm Size in Chronic Infections;

observed in vivo biofilm patches were all similar in sizes between the different types of chronic infections (Table 1) and mostly ranged from 5 to 200 mm in diame- ter; the median for the smallest and largest biofilm dia- meters were 5 and 50 mm, respectively. However, catheter- and shunt-associated infections reached larger biofilm patch sizes up to 1200 mm, possibly due to the presence of a large solid abiotic surface easily accessible to bacterial colonization. ...
