In de boswachterij Hart van Drenthe, tussen Elp en Grolloo, zoekt een student van de Wageningen Universiteit naar teken. Teken die hersenvliesontsteking (encefalitis) kunnen veroorzaken, om precies te zijn. Sinds 2016 komen ze ook in Nederland voor.
Op De Utrechtse Heuvelrug en de Sallandse Heuvelrug zijn geïnfecteerde teken gevonden, dat is definitief bewijs dat het virus daar circuleert
In 2016 heeft het RIVM het reeënbloed dat het DWHC in 2009-2010 in het kader van een ander onderzoek had verzameld, getest op antistoffen tegen het teken-encefalitis virus. Van de 297 geteste bloedmonsters, waren er zes positief, waarvan vijf van reeën op de Sallandse Heuvelrug (Overijssel) en één van een ree in de provincie Noord-Brabant.
In 2017 zijn in totaal ruim 600 reeënbloedmonsters op antistoffen getest. Hiervan testten er 22 positief
Vorig jaar werd uit het onderzoek van reeënbloed door het Dutch Wildlife Health Centre (DWHC) van de Universiteit Utrecht en het RIVM bekend dat er een toename was van het aantal locaties van reeën met antistoffen tegen het virus in vergelijking met 2009-2010, zie bericht met de eindresultaten externe link. In dit bericht wordt ook uitgelegd waarom het ree is gekozen als goede indicator voor het onderzoek naar het TBE/FSME-virus. In Nederland hebben verschillende onderzoeken plaats gevonden aan de verspreiding van het TBE/FSME—virus in Nederland.
Het RIVM heeft de resultaten van deze verschillende onderzoeken, waaronder ook het reeënbloed-onderzoek van DWHC/RIVM, nu in één overzichtelijke kaart samengebracht (zie kaart).

Brain inflammation with Lyme disease
In a new study, researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine have found evidence of chemical changes and widespread inflammation in the brains of patients with chronic symptoms following treatment for Lyme disease.
The Brain Scans
In the JH study, all participants received a PET scan, which shows levels of inflammation throughout the brain. They were also given a radiographic tracer to highlight glial activation. Glia are specialized cells that operate between the immune system and the nervous system.
The researchers were surprised to find the PET scans revealed significantly higher levels of inflammation, across eight different regions of the brain, in the PTLDS patients as compared with controls. As you can see, in the photo below, it looks like the Lyme brains are on fire.

“What this study does is provide evidence that the brain fog in patients with post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome has a physiological basis and isn’t just psychosomatic or related to depression or anxiety,” says John Aucott, director of the Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Research Center.
In addition, the results suggest that drugs designed to curb neuroinflammation may be able to treat PTLDS, although clinical trials are needed first to determine the safety and benefit of such therapy, Aucott says.
